Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 1, Issue 1,   Pages 62-68 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2014027

Abstract: The Southern Ningxia Hilly Area is one of the most impoverished areas of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (a province) of China due to an economy that mainly relies on agriculture, which is affected by droughts in two out of every three years. Government programs have attempted to develop an increased and sustainable level of scientifically based agricultural production while restoring the environment. However, since the population exceeds the capacity of the land to adequately support it, a program is underway to move 350000 people to more suitable locations. This paper outlines the past improvements to the Southern Ningxia Hilly Area and considers future development in the context of migration for ecological reasons.

Defective Nickle–Iron Layered Double Hydroxide for Enhanced Photocatalytic NO Oxidation with Significant Alleviation

Engineering doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2023.06.017

Abstract: Photocatalysis offers a sustainable avenue for the oxidative removal of low concentrations of NOx from the atmosphere. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising candidate photocatalysts owing to their unique layered and tunable chemical structures, and the abundant hydroxide (OH−) moieties on their surfaces that are hydroxyl radical (•OH) precursors. However, inferior charge separation and limited active sites on an LDH hinder its practical applications. Herein, we developed a facile N2H4-driven etching (et) approach that introduces dual Ni2+ and OH− vacancies (Niv and OHv) into NiFe-LDH nanosheets (referred to as NiFe-LDH-et) that facilitate improved charge-carrier separation and the formation of active Lewis acidic sites (Fe3+ and Ni2+ exposed at OHv). In contrast to inert pristine LDH, NiFe-LDH-et actively removes NO when illuminated with visible light. Specifically, Ni76Fe24-LDH-et etched in 1.50 mmol·L−1 N2H4 solution removes 32.8% of the NO from continuously flowing air (NO-feed concentration: ∼500 parts per billion (ppb)) when illuminated with visible light, thereby outperforming most reported catalysts. Experimental and theoretical data reveal that the dual vacancies promote the production of reactive oxygen species (•O2− and •OH) and the adsorption of NO on the LDH. In-situ spectroscopy revealed that NO is preferentially adsorbed at Lewis acidic sites, particularly exposed Fe3+ sites, and then converted into NO+ that is subsequently oxidized to NO3− without the formation of any of the more toxic NO2 intermediate, thereby alleviating risks associated with its production and emission.

The Environmental Impact of the Three Gorges Project and the Countermeasures

You-mei Lu,Cun-liang Shang

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2014, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 120-128 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2014019

Abstract: The Three Gorges Project (TGP) is a landmark Chinese hydroelectric project with the goal of harnessing the Yangtze River and developing its water resources. Because of its enormous size and far-reaching influence, the project’s impact on the Yangtze River’s original ecological environment has been a concern to many people. This article examines the environmental effects of TGP with regard to reservoir-induced seismicity and bank stability, climate changes, sedimentation and bank erosion, the protection of aquatic species and water quality, and resettlement. Based on the operation monitoring data of TGP in 10 years (2003—2012), this article analyzes the tendency of reservoir-induced seismicity and bank stability, developing trend of sedimentation and bank erosion, the interplay between climate change and TGP, the distribution and cause of water contamination, the situation of aquatic species’ protection and living situation of resettled residents. At the same time, this article lists the comprehensive benefits of TGP in flood control, power generation, shipping, water supply, energy conservation and emission reduction. In the end, the authors deem that there is a dynamic and harmonious relationship between humankind and nature. The cognition about TGP will be progressed in practice, and harmonious relationship between the environment and TGP will be achieved through more practice.

Alleviation of cell damage in experimental ANP in rats by administration of chondroitin-sulfate reduces

HE Zhongye, GUO Renxuan, LI Yang, XIE Chengyao, LIU Nan, SONG Wen

Frontiers of Medicine 2007, Volume 1, Issue 1,   Pages 36-40 doi: 10.1007/s11684-007-0007-5

Abstract: In order to explore the effects of retrograde infusion of chondroitin-sulfate via the pancreatic duct on cytoprotection and attenuation of oxidative damage during acute necrotic pancreatitis (ANP), male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: A, B (experimental groups) and C (sham operation, control group). The rats in group A was subjected to retrograde injection of 5% sodium taurocholate via the pancreatic duct, and those in group B received chondroitin-sulfate therapy after ANP induction. All rats in three groups were killed at 6 h. The levels of malondialdehyde (MAD), total superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and serum amylase (SAM) were measured. The morphologic changes in pancreatic tissues were observed. It was found that the level of SAM was increased in group A and group B, with corresponding pathological changes of ANP. The levels of ATP, GSH and SOD in group A were decreased markedly and MDN increased significantly as compared with those in group B (P<0.01). In group B, the histopathologic damage was attenuated to a certain extent in comparison to that in group A. It was concluded that endogenous antioxidants were significantly reduced and lipid peroxidation increased during ANP. Retrograde infusion of chondroitin-sulfate via pancreatic duct could alleviate the pancreatic cell damage as a sort of scavengers of oxygen free radicals.
